Until quite recently these birds were always associated
with the Thrush family, but they are now considered more aligned to
Flycatchers. 20 species have been seen in the UK from 8 different
families. 7 species breed in this country; European Robin, Common
Nightingale, Common and Black Redstart, Northern Wheatear, Whinchat and
Common Stonechat. Of the rest, Bluethroat is a scarce passage
bird; Pied, Desert and Black-eared Wheatears are rare to the UK as is
Thrush Nightingale. Rufous Bush Robin, Red-flanked Bluetail,
White-throated Robin, Siberian Rubythroat, Moussier's Redstart,
Isabelline and White-crowned Wheatear are very rare vagrants to Britain. A sub species of Stonechat is seen annually in the UK. Siberian Stonechat may someday be elevated to full species. |
